B.Com Gems & Jewellery Design is a unique course offered in only few selected universities / institutions for students who are passionate about arts. This course is more apt for people who are creative and also at the same time who would like to be entrepreneurs. As all the designs created are different and unique still they follow some school of art or inspired from some type of school of thoughts. Course is designed in such a manner that student after completion of course can differentiate stones, design themes and work out costing. Students will also get exposed of modern tools which are used to design jewellery, accessories and will also learn about Management, Finance and Marketing.
There is a huge demand for designer and antique jewellery in our country as always India being one of the largest markets for Gold Jewellery. Whereas market for diamond and gems is not restricted to any country or continent as people from all countries use gems and diamonds as ornaments. Students need to carry out a project and internship from any relevant organization which will help them to gain hands on experience and exposure.
Though the jewellery industry was run in a very traditional manner till recent years in India and the business was owned by few families only, now they have opened up to outsiders also as the industry has grown tremendously which has resulted in dearth of skilled men. Gems and Jewellery contributes to about 7 percent of our GDP with an annual turnover of over US$30 Billion, growing year on year. India is the world’s largest cutting and polishing center for Diamond, which is not known to many Indians as it happens in unorganized small scale industries restricted to only few cities.
Only knowledge of theory in this course will not help students to build their career, hence students need to work in organizations which can provide sufficient experience in manufacturing and design of jewellery and ornaments. As they gain experience they would be able to do the quality checks and also learn to grade the material and design based on standard parameters.
